Cortisol is commonly referred to as the stress hormone. One of its roles in the body is to manage stress, but it also has other functions. It's involved in your immune system, metabolism, inflammatory response, and even your sleep-wake cycle. Certain conditions can cause higher- or lower-than-normal levels of cortisol. When cortisol levels are higher or lower than typical, it can create health problems.
