GLP-1 medications can help some people manage their weight or blood glucose. But side effects are possible, just like they are with most medications.

Up to 85% of people taking GLP-1s may experience gastrointestinal side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation.

Side effects may be mild and temporary, going away as your body gets used to the medication. But they’re also unpleasant.

If you’re on a GLP-1, there are some things you can do to avoid or reduce stomach upset and other digestive issues.

This video contains the following tips:

Change When and How You Eat

Eat slowly, so you can be more mindful of when you’re full and stop to avoid reaching a point of discomfort.

Don’t lie down right after eating. It can help to avoid eating near bedtime.

Avoid moderate or intense physical activity after eating, too.

Keep a Food Diary

Writing down your food and eating habits can help you figure out what may make you feel better or worse.

Eat Foods That Are Gentle on Your Stomach

Try bland, unfried foods that are easy to digest, like crackers, rice, and broth. Mint and ginger may also be soothing. Take small sips of liquid between bites of food.

It may also help to avoid artificial sweeteners and coffee, which can make diarrhea worse. Foods that are high in fiber, like seeds, grains, and some fruits and vegetables, can also be hard to digest.

Stay Hydrated

If you have vomiting or diarrhea, it’s important to replace fluids you’ve lost. Be careful to take small sips and avoid sports drinks. Hydration can help relieve constipation, too.

Do Some Gentle Movement

Light exercise may help ease digestive symptoms.

Get Fresh Air

Fresh air can help if you’re feeling nauseated. Avoiding strong smells is also a good idea.

Talk to Your Healthcare Provider

If you’re concerned about side effects, your healthcare provider can help you understand what to expect and how to feel your best.

For most people, side effects go away after a short period of time, so it’s worth sticking it out.
