The Facts on Alcohol and Pregnancy
You may be tempted to share a celebratory toast with family or friends. But it’s important to avoid all alcohol while you’re pregnant. That includes beer, wine, cocktails, and liquor.
Alcohol can get passed to an unborn baby. It can cause a variety of serious problems, and there’s no amount that’s been proven safe.
Stop drinking as soon as you find out you’re pregnant, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends.
Want a festive drink? Try nonalcoholic seltzer with fruit, sparkling juice, or a mocktail instead.
If you’re having trouble staying away from alcohol, talk to your doctor. Consider getting help through Alcoholics Anonymous at AA.org. Or call the SAMHSA National Helpline at 800-662-HELP.
