Heart-Healthy Yogurt Bark Treats
Valentine’s Day may be over, but it’s not too late to make yourself and your loved ones a sweet treat—especially one that’s loaded with heart-healthy nutrients.
Frozen yogurt barks are great as a tasty anytime dessert and are packed with antioxidants and high in protein and fiber. We’ve come up with three variations that use a minimum of ingredients but produce maximum flavor.
Four key ingredients in our yogurt bark assist in enhancing your mental health and protecting your heart:
Pomegranate: This fruit contains a high concentration of polyphenols. A 2023 study suggests that pomegranate polyphenols can decrease inflammation and oxidative stress, and improve depression and anxiety. Additionally, studies suggest that pomegranates may help reduce heart disease risk factors such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Hibiscus tea: Fat- and carb-free hibiscus tea has a ton of vitamins, minerals, and flavonoids and other antioxidants. Studies suggest it may help reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure—and may even help lower the risk for cardiovascular disease.
Omega-3s PUFAs: Chia seeds and walnuts are not only high-fiber additions but also great sources of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Omega-3 PUFAs have a wide array of significant benefits in cardiovascular health, and a 2019 study suggests they may also help improve depression. Plus, adding healthy fats, like those in walnuts, to a dish is a great way to also boost the flavor!
Beets: Beets aren’t the most common ingredient to include in a dessert, but in this treat, you won’t even notice them. This superfood isn’t just an added source of beneficial nutrients and fiber; the phytochemicals in beets have significant cardioprotective effects.
Pair these nutritious ingredients with plain, low-fat Greek yogurt to make these guilt-free desserts.
